I just came in from my morning walk.
My devotions led me to this…
I have a small herd of cows and a small flock of chickens. They give me much pleasure.
That isn’t why I am thinking about them this morning.
The cows, by the standards of my limited means, are expensive and valuable animals. The chickens? I probably couldn’t give them away. They cost me way more than they could ever produce.
The vast majority of my visits I go directly to the chickens. I check their feed and water. I turn them out to graze. I check their health. Almost always twice a day I do this.
The cows? Not so much. Most mornings I give them a casual glance - at most. Don’t misunderstand. During calving, drought, and uncommon cold I check more closely. If a cow needs my attention they get it.
But on a daily basis the chickens are the recipients of a lot more tlc. Makes no sense does it?
Except for this.
They are highly vulnerable to predators. They are almost totally incapable of problem solving. Without my constant attention they would die. They need me and I would be a pretty dang sloppy soul if I didn’t care for them. Heck, I am even somewhat fond of them!
Funny how we are almost the opposite about people. The wealthy and powerful and notorious get our attention. Almost all of our attention. Sometimes fanatical attention. They aren’t even calving but they cause us stress and bitterness and fractured relationships. It is weird when you think about it eh?
The weak? Those who are vulnerable to predators? Those who struggle with decisions for many reasons? Well, not so much.
Here is where that whole “least of these” thing comes in.
Guess which one is the Christ we’ve been given to love? And feed? And visit? And heal?
Funny how a chicken can affect you.
If you aren’t born again to a vision of the beautiful but vulnerable Jesus you might just lay an egg.
But when the new creation is awakened in you, and all around you, something is there that you’ve been seeking.
And you are tending to the chickens when, suddenly, someone with the most interesting voice and choice of words says “receive the Kingdom prepared for you from the beginning.”
And those birds take wing in your soul.
